John Lee Dumas is the founder and host of EOFire, an award-winning daily podcast that has featured incredible entrepreneurs such as Tony Robbins, Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk, Barbara Corcoran, Tim Ferriss, Brian Tracy, and over 1500 others.
Through EOFire, which reaches millions of listeners, John has built a seven-figure, fast-growing, impactful business.
I met John when I appeared as a guest on the show. As our friendship evolved and I learned more about his business, I clearly understood why he’s become so successful.
In this article, I share some of the many lessons I have learned from John, which you can also apply in your business to get on the path to fast growth and positive impact.
Invest in yourself
Before he started his business, when he was eager to get “out of the rat race,” John realized he needed help. That’s why he reached out to Jaime Tardy, who became his business mentor.
With Jaime’s guidance, John was able to grow his podcast and business much faster than if he had tried to figure things out on his own or had created excuses to not invest in himself.
I personally had to experience a big failure with one of my first training programs to realize I needed help and guidance. Don’t let this happen to you.

Find your niche—and be loyal to it
If you visit the “About” page on EOFire.com, you’ll see a video of EOFire’s one perfect listener: Jimmy. Jimmy comes alive because of one reason: John knows him deeply. And that’s why John can meet his one perfect listener’s needs so well.
As Kate Erickson, implementer at EOFire says, “Really knowing your avatar allows you to quickly choose the right path – make informed decisions based on what you already know about your perfect customer – which will help you continue to move one step forward versus two steps back.”
You know what they say: You won’t help anyone if you’re trying to help everyone. I first brushed this important truth aside, but soon I learned that finding my niche was key for the long-term survival of my business.

Put in the time
John often quotes “Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t.”
Does this mean that John works his butt off at EOFire? Yes, of course! The key is to focus your efforts so that you get positive results sooner rather than later.

Deliver consistent value
Back in 2012 when EOFire was born, John was a pioneer of the daily podcast concept. He knew he wanted to create value on a consistent basis to grow his audience on a consistent basis, too.
Now, EOFire doesn’t only bring value through the podcast itself, but through a series of high-quality free classes on podcasting, webinars, funnels, and goal achievement. These free courses are some of the best I’ve seen (and trust me, I’ve seen many!)
As a result, the EOFire audience, a.k.a. Fire Nation, has developed a deep sense of trust in John. That trust is one of the reasons for the success of EOFire.
If you find yourself giving up on your blog, podcast, or videos soon after you start, you might be either trying to do too much (and feeling burned out as a result) or doing something that doesn’t resonate with your values/the values of your audience.

Batch to do more in less time
People thought John was crazy to start a daily podcast. How would he have time to do it all?
But John applied top principles of productivity to help him run the podcast and grow the business at the same time.
One of those concepts is batching. Just like a production line uses batching, John records all the shows for the week in one day. It’s a long day, but this structure allows him to do it all and to do it well.
There are many more ways to be more productive. For example, I know I’m most creative in the mornings, so when I want to get something done, I do it early in the day.
Also, as I work on my #1 goal for the day, I close my email app and all social media pages to eliminate distractions. Works for me!
Find what works for you to increase your productivity and implement it in your daily schedule.
All of EOFire’s programs are offered through a simple sequence of free courses and/or live webinars. The programs are evergreen and don’t include big launches with tight schedules.
Little I knew back then that I was setting myself up for a lot of stress and dangerous single points of failure.
That’s not to say that launches don’t have a place within your business model. Instead, the goal is to find a mix of strategies and offerings that maximize revenue/impact and minimize risk/stress.

Show you care—one person at a time
When John was getting ready for the Kickstarter campaign of the Mastery Journal (a guide to master productivity, discipline and focus in 100 days), he personally emailed his 1,500 past show guests to share the news and ask for their support.
John also personally responds to many of the emails he gets from readers and listeners.
Kate Erickson, John’s “better half” and implementer at EOFire, is notable for also personally replying to emails.
Caring is part of the EOFire brand, and it shows!
I love that, and so does everyone who reaches out to either John or Kate. This level of caring creates trust and loyalty that last.

Let your audience experience you LIVE
Even though John recognizes the value of pre-recorded webinars, he recommends doing live webinars for a much stronger connection with your audience and better results.
As someone who has attended and probably also given live workshops, you know the difference live interaction makes.
What if live webinars aren’t your thing? There are other ways you can interact with your audience in real time. Facebook live is one of those ways, and something I’m currently doing in my business.
No matter the medium, the key is to remember that live interaction is a must in your business.

Be transparent with the good and the bad
I’m a fan of EOFire’s monthly income reports, where John and his team share a detailed breakdown of their sources of revenue and expenses.
Not only that; the income reports include a good portion of lessons learned that month. Some of those lessons come from results that didn’t measure up to expectations.
Transparency includes sharing the good and the not-so-good, too. This all-encompassing authenticity creates trust, and also allows your audience to learn what works and doesn’t work.

Build and nurture a community around your core values
The EOFire community is known as Fire Nation. Members of the community share common struggles and a common goal to succeed as entrepreneurs through focused work and dedication.
John and his team have built such a close-knit community, that when John and Kate reached out to the members of their FB group to support the Kickstarter launch of the Mastery Journal, many people jumped at the opportunity to help.
The “Street Team,” as they called this group of volunteers, spread the word about the journal for no financial gain. They only wanted to help share the message because they believed in that message.
That’s what happens when you create a strong sense of community.
In my case, the core values of my community are empowerment, collaboration, integrity, and impact. My one word to describe what unites us is “Magnificence.” Members of my community want to reveal their magnificence, and we’re all building magnificent businesses together.

Help for the sake of helping
Nothing better than to feel you’re growing a business that makes a difference. John knows that well, so he’s partnered with Pencils of Promise, a charity focused on building schools. John’s work has impacted nearly 500 students with a lifetime impact of nearly 10,000 students—and counting.
Also, I’ve personally experienced John’s desire to help those around him. His sharing my content and expertise with his audience has had a huge positive impact on my business.

Hire a winning team

It’s easy to want to do it all because no one will be able to do things “right.” But the truth is that without help, it’ll be very difficult if not impossible for you to grow your business.
The key is to find the right people to join your team, which starts by selecting those who share your values and mission.
The next step is to break down your processes and define what activities can be delegated and which ones require your brilliance.

Today, take one step to define what activities would be ideal to delegate to the member(s) of your winning team. And if you don’t have such a team, take one step to get you closer to having one.
As you see, growing a magnificent business that thrives in the long term is the result of many factors. Most of those factors are common sense, but are easily dismissed or put aside “for later.”
I’ve learned that all is takes is keen awareness of your thoughts and actions to get things moving in the right direction.
