What Is Your What?
What is the one thing you were born to do?
Steve Olsher, who has built several successful businesses, and who now helps other entrepreneurs succeed, visited my show to share his insights on how to answer this essential question. Below are some of the highlights of our conversation.
Embrace the Notion that There IS Something Unique About You
To find your what, you must be willing to “turn on the light switch” and realize the existence of something special inside you. That something will help you create a difference in the lives of those around you, and will give you a clear sense that you’re fulfilling your purpose.
Awareness of this notion might not come easy, though. It takes courage to recognize that you have a gift, and you’re the only person who can decide to take on the challenge.
Know That Change Doesn’t Happen Overnight
Creating the life you’ve always envisioned will take time. That’s why it’s important that you find financial security before making a drastic change in your career or business.
As Steve says, “It doesn’t make any sense to put yourself in a position of pressure” in which you don’t have enough to pay the bills, so you’re too stressed out to create something magical.
Basically, wait to “quit your day job.”
In my case, every time I act out of pressure, I not only get poor results, but I lose all the inspiration to come up with ideas to help my business.
Evolution Is the Only Constant
When you reach a goal, a new one will pop up. To avoid unnecessary frustration, it’s important to remember that you’ll be constantly evolving depending on your own growth and the changing circumstances in your life.
When It Comes to Goal-Setting, Do What Works for You
It’s not absolutely necessary to lay out a rigid path for yourself or your business. However, most successful people have a methodical way to set ambitious goals.
What matters most is that you have a clear destination, and that you take action to reach that destination in the most effective and enjoyable way possible.
Connect with Those Who Have Achieved What You Want
As Tony Robbins says, “Success leaves clues.” If you surround yourself with people who have been where you want to be, you’ll achieve your goals much faster.
Yes, you can try to figure things out on your own, but those who have been most successful are those who replicated the action of those they admire.
Follow Your Own Definition of Success
You know what success means to you. As you follow the formula to find your what, consider what matters most to you.
The formula is simple:
Your What = Your gift + the vehicle to reach those around you + the people who you’re meant to help
There is not a right or wrong answer to define each element in the formula. You’re born with your gift, but your vehicle and the people you serve will change over time as you evolve.
Start with the part of the equation you feel most comfortable with. If you have a good sense of what your gift is, then start there. You’ll build positive momentum to figure out the other parts of the equation.
In the end, if you wake up with a fire in your soul, you have found your What.
